Preventing Waste, Engaging Local Communities: the RUS Resources & Waste Working Group, coordinated by PoliMI, takes part in the EWWR webinar for Public Administrations

On Wednesday, 16 September 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the webinar “Preventing Waste, Engaging Local Communities. Experiences and Tools for Public Administrations” will take place, broadcast live on the Facebook and YouTube channels of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR).

The European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) is an environmental communication campaign involving institutions, citizens, businesses, associations, schools and universities, with the aim of raising awareness of the amount of waste produced and, above all, promoting its prevention and reduction at source.

The 2026 edition of the EWWR, scheduled from 21 to 29 November, will focus on “Material Sufficiency”, an approach that encourages reflection on needs and on production and consumption models, giving priority to reducing the unnecessary, sharing, reuse, repair and extending the life of products.

Further information about the campaign is available on the official Italian EWWR page, managed by AICA – International Association for Environmental Communication, and on the European Week for Waste Reduction website, where further details on the 2026 thematic focus are also available.

The webinar will focus in particular on the role of Public Administrations, including universities, in waste prevention and in engaging local communities. Through data, environmental policies, operational tools and good practices, the event will present experiences showing how public bodies and institutions can turn prevention objectives into concrete actions, actively involving citizens, schools, universities, businesses and associations.

After the introduction to the EWWR 2026 campaign by AICA, the programme will include contributions — moderated by Lorenzo Robbiano, Project Manager at Prokalos — from Federica Porta for the WEEE Coordination Centre, Emiliano D’Accardi for the Emilia-Romagna Region, Salvatore Quinci for the Municipality of Mazara del Vallo, Paola Fretta for the Municipality of Caronno Pertusella, Simona Pasquali for the Municipality of Cremona and Eleonora Perotto as coordinator of the Resources and Waste Working Group of RUS – Network of Universities for Sustainable Development.

The contribution will focus on the role universities can play in waste prevention, both through their own policies and the actions implemented on campus, and through education and the engagement of university communities. Particular attention will be given to the role of students, not only as members of the university community, but also as citizens and agents of change, called upon to make more informed choices in the use of resources and able to transfer sustainable behaviours and practices beyond the university context.

Finally, please note that the Resources and Waste Working Group promotes the participation of universities in the EWWR every year, collecting and highlighting the initiatives carried out by member universities, fostering the exchange of experiences and the dissemination of good practices in prevention, reduction, reuse and proper resource management. Initiatives promoted by universities as part of the EWWR are collected on the dedicated RUS page:

The webinar is open to anyone interested.
Participation is free of charge, subject to registration via this form.
