Designing for fun! Primary school students exploring the Leonardo campus
On February 25, 2026, as part of the “Designing for fun!” project, the Leonardo Campus of Politecnico di Milano will be transformed into an open-air laboratory for two classes from the “Bruno Munari” primary school of Milan. An entire morning will be dedicated to discovering environmental sustainability through games, storytelling, and exploration.
The initiative is part of the “Sustainable architecture school for children” project – conceived by architect Linda Poletti, with the scientific supervision by Ilaria Oberti (Department of Architecture, Built Environment and Construction Engineering) – promoted by Centro Studi Circolo Caldara, with the contribution of Fondazione Comunità Milano and Fondazione AEM – Gruppo A2A.
The value of the “Designing for fun!”project lies in its ability to combine the language of games with the principles of environmental sustainability and design culture, both key themes for Politecnico di Milano. At the same time, it encourages children to recognize their active role in building a more sustainable future. The initiative is part of the University’s broader commitment to raising awareness among younger generations about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to promoting responsible lifestyles.
A programme of exploration and discoveries
The purpose of the day is to introduce the young students to the world of sustainable architecture through hands-on activities, interactive games, and a short exploratory tour of the Campus, to help them understand how every daily choice – even the smallest one – impacts the overall well-being of communities.
The morning will begin at 10:00 a.m. with an introduction by Eleonora Perotto – Head of Environmental Sustainable Unit. The fun-based learning programme will then explore the topics of water, separate waste collection, and sustainable mobility, followed by a short tour of Leonardo Campus to see some of the sustainable structures implemented.
Where does our water comes from?
Thanks to Manuela Antonelli and Elena Sezenna (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering), the young participants will be guided on a journey to discover water and the engineering behind everyday actions: what are the differences between tap water and the water from a water bottle or a plastic water bottle? Through games and experiments, the children will learn firsthand what makes our tap water safe and will understand the impact of different consumption choices.
Let’s sort waste together!
Eleonora Perotto, Chiara Minerva, and Melissa Paris (Environmental Sustainable Unit), together with Scila Melita Ficarelli (Facility Management Unit), will guide the children through interactive activities to understand how to improve separate waste collection with the goal to transform an everyday task into a small mission of environmental responsibility, demonstrating how every material has its own value and can be upcycled.
Exploring the Campus!
By exploring the Campus, including fountains, water disposals, bicycle stations, and electric charging stations, the young visitors will understand how spatial design can improve sustainable behaviors. The morning will conclude with final greetings and a moment of discussion and reflection on what they learned during their visit to Politecnico.
