Thanks to NANDO, separating waste collection has become smarter

How to correctly dispose of the waste we produce?. It is very common to be confused by the system. Let’s take for example a paper cup that has just been used to drink our coffee. Where do we throw it after use? In the paper recycle bin? Wrong answer, as it contains some plastic. In plastic, or in the rubbish bin, because it is dirty? As you can see, it can be very confusing. Furthermore, there can be differences in its management from one municipality to another

To help the University’s multicultural users, the Politecnico’s Supplies & Facility Management Division has launched the NANDO project on an experimental basis.
The need to improve and increase the efficiency of separating waste led to the adoption of NANDO, a system that, uses a camera to analyse the waste: this function allows each component to be instantly recognised and indicates which bin the waste should be deposited into.

The activities of supply, management and technical assistance of the equipment are carried out by A2A Smart City, a company of the A2A S.p.A. group.
This is a service which wants involve actively the community, which aims to educate and raise awareness on the issue, through simple and intuitive information provided through a tablet. In summary, a concrete example of how technology can help us make appropriate choices.

The solution, which is currently experimental, involves 12 collection stations of 3 litter bins each, equipped with a tablet. The smart bins are currently located at the Leonardo Campus Library (Building 11), the Department of Physics (Building 8), the Infrastructure Management and Services Area (Buildings 1, 2), and the Campus Life Area (Building 3).
